5 great things

1. Leaning over the sink to eat a mango ten minutes after I wake

2. Opening the doors and pulling the curtains aside instead of turning on the lights

3. The luffing sound of the ceiling fan, as opposed to the buzz of the AC

3. Hearing birds, insects and peepers when I go to sleep

4. Using power outages as an excuse for a walk

5. Afternoon break: lunch, shower, nap

John, it sounds like you live the ideal life, except for the pesky cockroaches. We dealt with those on Mercy Ships by setting up lethal "cockroach hotels," I guess so they could party one last time before departing the planet.

By the way, my professor told me I should expand my paper on the Naxalites, since "no one has done anything like it before," so if you find any primary sources on them, send them my way (i.e., if you happen to run into a Naxalite in a nearby village, and if you happen to have a digital recorder on hand, feel free to hit the power button and then get into a lively conversation). I'd appreciate it. Just don't get killed.

Hmm, I looked up some information on the Naxalites. They sound like a bit of a pack of sad sacks, albeit dangerous sad sacks with guns... After about three days of killing cockroaches, the lower floor of the house seems to be reasonably free of them. Now I have semi-feral kittens that keep climbing through the window bars. I kid you not about this. They come into the kitchen and start mewling at 6:30 or so.

ah, I know of this nice "kitten hotel" you can use . . .
